Wedding News > What to wear to a wedding

17 July 2008

If the expected attire is not stated on the wedding invitation, you may be confused as to what you should wear. Unless stated otherwise, try to look dressy for the wedding.

The location of the wedding and the time of year may influence your decision on what to wear.

  • Outdoors - Try to avoid heels as they may sink into the ground. Opt for wedges or flats instead.
  • Indoors - Do for a dress or suit that you would wear to the theatre or a fancy restaurant.
  • Summer - An outfit that won't be too hot. Opt for light colours.
  • Winter - Wear warm clothing. Look for dresses with sleeves, or take a wrap to keep you warm. A suit or a smart outfit should be fine.
  • Autumn - Check the weather report and choose clothes appropriately if it is an outdoor wedding. You don't want to be cold.
  • Spring - Again, check the weather. Go for bright colours.
  • Formal/Black tie - A cocktail dress or a floor length dress should be suitable. Men should wear smart suits or a tuxedo.

Try to avoid wearing:

  • White.
  • Jeans.
  • Anything too revealing.
  • Torn clothes.
