Wedding News > Wedding commitment still held in high regard

2 May 2008

Wedding ideals remain strong as Australians are apparently still supporting the idea of marriage, even though they more readily accept the idea of cohabitation without marriage. Apparently less than 50 per cent of Australians over the age of 15 are now married, down from 65 per cent in 1971.

The statistics may show a lack of interest in marriage and wedding celebrations, but most adults do not believe that marriage is an obsolete demonstration of commitment. Whether this is a sincerely held belief is not certain, but there is certainly a willingness amongst couples to eventually get married.

It isn't as if the wedding industry has suffered in recent years, either, as the increasing rarity of a wedding has seemingly led to the events becoming larger, with the frequency of partners who are not getting married for the first time meaning there is the possibility of repeat business.
